AsphaltCosts.com is a free asphalt quantity and paving estimation hub. It helps homeowners, small paving contractors, property managers, and estimators answer one practical question: how much asphalt does my project actually need, what should I order, and what might it cost?
How our calculators work
Every number on this site — calculator results, worked examples, coverage tables, and long-tail answers — is produced by a single calculation engine. We do not hand-type figures into pages, so examples and tools can never drift apart.
The core calculation chain is:
- Area (from length × width, known area, or multiple shapes)
- × finished compacted thickness
- × density (default 145 lb/ft³, always editable)
- ÷ 2,000 = net US tons
- + your order allowance = recommended order quantity
- ÷ truck capacity = number of loads
Where our defaults come from
- Default density 145 lb/ft³: FHWA Western Federal Lands Estimating Handbook. The Asphalt Institute notes typical HMA densities of 142–148 lb/ft³; supplier or mix-design values should replace the default when available.
- Order allowance guidance (3–5%): FHWA estimating examples. Allowance is kept strictly separate from compaction so nothing is counted twice.
- Loose-to-compacted rolldown (~25% rule of thumb for dense-graded mixes): Asphalt Paving Handbook. Actual values depend on the mix and field practice.
What this site is not
This site provides planning estimates, not engineering design. Pavement structure, thickness, and materials for a real project depend on traffic, subgrade, drainage, climate, local specifications, and the judgment of qualified professionals. Always confirm quantities and prices with your supplier or contractor before ordering.
