Multi-Area Asphalt Calculator — Irregular Lots & Sectional Takeoff

Real sites are not one rectangle. Add a row per section — driveway, apron, turnaround, parking aisle — in any mix of rectangles, circles, triangles, and trapezoids. Every row gets its own tonnage in the breakdown table, and the totals roll up into order quantity and truckloads with the final-load remainder.

Areas

Split L-shapes, aprons, and turnarounds into rectangles, circles, triangles, or trapezoids. We sum them.

The Formula

Total = Σ row areas • Net tons = (Total sq ft × Thickness in ÷ 12) × Density ÷ 2,000 • Order = Net × (1 + Allowance %)

How the Calculation Runs

  1. Compute each row’s area with its shape formula (metric lengths convert to feet first).
  2. Sum the rows for total area.
  3. Total area × thickness (ft) × density ÷ 2,000 = net tons.
  4. Apply allowance once for the order quantity.
  5. Split into truckloads (round up) and report the final-load remainder.
  6. The takeoff table repeats step 3 per row so you can stage deliveries by section.

What Each Variable Means

SymbolVariableUnitNotes
AᵢRow areasq ftRectangle L×W; circle π(d/2)²; triangle ½·b·h; trapezoid ½(a+b)·h. Metric inputs are converted first.
TCompacted thicknessinUniform across rows in this tool; for different lifts per section, run each separately.
DDensitylb/ft³Planning default 145; use the mix-design value when known.
ALAllowance%Applied once to the summed total, never per row.

Entering Your Numbers

  • Areas — Split L-shapes, aprons, and turnarounds into rectangles, circles, triangles, or trapezoids. We sum them.
  • Length unit
  • Compacted thickness (in)
  • Density (lb/ft³) — Typical hot mix runs 142–148 lb/ft³. Use your supplier’s mix-design value when you have it.
  • Order allowance — Covers edges, cuts, and measurement error. Not a compaction factor.
  • Truck capacity (tons) — Leave blank to skip truckloads.

Known Limitations

  • All rows share one thickness and density. Multi-lift projects (different base and surface thicknesses per section) need one run per lift.
  • Shapes cover the practical decomposition of paved areas; true freeform curves should be split into trapezoids or measured with a wheel/plan.
  • Per-row tonnage is net. The allowance is a single total-level buffer — do not add another per row.

Worked Examples

Every number below is produced by the same engine at build time — not typed by hand.

Driveway plus wide apron

Asphalt to order: 22.84 US tons

  1. Area: 20 ft × 50 ft + 10 ft × 20 ft = 1,200 sq ft
  2. Thickness: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  3. Volume: 1,200 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 300 ft³
  4. Weight: 300 ft³ × 145 lb/ft³ = 43,500 lb
  5. Net tons: 43,500 lb ÷ 2,000 = 21.75 US tons
  6. Order allowance: +5% = +1.09 tons
  7. Order quantity: 21.75 tons × (1 + 0.05) = 22.84 tons
  8. Truckloads: 22.84 tons ÷ 20-ton truck (round up) = 2 loads, final load 2.84 tons

Court with a circular turnaround and a triangular gusset

Asphalt to order: 34.15 US tons

  1. Area: 24 ft × 60 ft + circle ø 16 ft + triangle 12 ft × 20 ft ÷ 2 = 1,761.06 sq ft
  2. Thickness: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  3. Volume: 1,761.06 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 440.27 ft³
  4. Weight: 440.27 ft³ × 145 lb/ft³ = 63,838.49 lb
  5. Net tons: 63,838.49 lb ÷ 2,000 = 31.92 US tons
  6. Order allowance: +7% = +2.23 tons
  7. Order quantity: 31.92 tons × (1 + 0.07) = 34.15 tons
  8. Truckloads: 34.15 tons ÷ 20-ton truck (round up) = 2 loads, final load 14.15 tons

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate asphalt for an irregular driveway?

Split it into simple shapes — rectangles for straight runs, a trapezoid for a widening apron, a circle or triangle for turnarounds — enter one row each, and the calculator sums areas, converts to tons at your thickness and density, and applies allowance once.

Can I mix units, like meters and feet?

Pick one length unit for the whole run with the unit selector. Mixed-unit takeoffs are a classic source of 3.28× errors; keep one ruler per calculation.

Why is per-row tonnage different from row area × allowance?

Because allowance is applied once at the total, not per row. The table shows net tons per section so you can stage deliveries; the order quantity adds the single total-level buffer.

How many trucks will this take?

Set the truck capacity and the result reports whole loads plus the final-load remainder — the number suppliers need for scheduling and short-load decisions.
